In response to Shock news - Digidesign's Mbox 2 is lacking in bass punch!, Daniel Enstrom writes...
"Well, measuring sound is close to not possible. As the article describes there is hard to hear the difference between 0.01% and 0.003% distortion.
The thing is that the difference you hear much more possibly is something else. Like different volume or different frequency response. Try this if you want maximum punch...
Take a good microphone of your choice, remove the contact in the bottom and fasten a fresh cable directly to the wiring. Open your preamp and do the same thing.
Do a recording and listen! Now you can hear that things really open up!
This means that there is more to it than just EQ and tech spec. The cables, the connectors, and so on also gives or takes the colors of your recording. If you want hard-hitting punch I suggest black and white.
This is so much more fun for us recording engineers. No magic, just magic.
Better sound, less flexibility."
Hmm, anyone ready to give this a go... and let us hear the results?
