Unfortunately, I don’t think that System 7 is suitable for the SE or the Classic, basically because the maximum memory expansion of these machines is 4 Megabytes. With 4 Megabytes and System 6.0.7, the most recent pre-System 7 version, there is enough memory to boost up the Finder memory to make bulk file copying easier (which I do to back up my hard disk to an optical disk), run two substantial programs concurrently under MultiFinder, and hardly ever get ‘Out of Memory’ alerts. Although System 7 has some attractive features, it takes up more space and I found that shortage of memory became a limiting factor for me. The computer also seemed rather sluggish, therefore I have returned to System 6.0.7 and would recommend it to all users of these models, even the Classic which is now supplied with System 7 installed. LC, LC II and Classic II users (who are still far fewer in number than the SE and Classic users and potential users I am catering for in this article) can expand their memory further so System 7 will be seen in its true glory, which is…

If you use a Mac with more than 4 Megabytes of RAM, I am sure you will find the upgrade to System 7.1 fully worth the price.
